Pearls!

For the past several months I have been focused on putting together a commercial line of jewelry using the logo for the Centers for Spiritual Living. I’ve had a huge learning curve working with subcontractors, so the project has been slow in coming together. I’m almost there. I’m still doing a little refining on the pieces, but the website is up (www.viajewelry.net), although in need of new photos. Here is a photo of one of the pieces, the CSL pendant…

Because of this project, I haven’t been working much on my designs. Back in March, I went to the MJSA (Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America) trade show. There are always some interesting talks, suppliers with the latest tools, equipment and supplies, and the gem dealers. I especially enjoy looking at all the amazing stones and pearls… which brings me to…

I fell in love with these chunky, silvery-grey baroque pearls that have so much texture and character. I had to have them and created the chunky silver link to go with them (shown below). My idea was to create a long string of the pearls interspersed with this large link. Still focused on the logo project, it wasn’t until my daughter’s wedding in June neared that I moved forward with the idea and created this necklace and earrings to wear for her wedding.

Fast forward to September, having still been focused on the CSL logo project through the summer (I went to a conference in California in August as a vendor to promote the jewelry), I finally completed another piece using the pearls. At 42 inches in length, the necklace has a nice weight to it. The silvery-grey pearls have touches of iridescence and I’ve matched the texture in some of the pearls with the texture on the bold,  two-sized links and accent beads.

They are fun pieces with such a great feel to them. I have enough pearls for another necklace, as well as a bracelet, and then I may have to go searching for more (since I cleaned out my supplier!).

Try It On Event

A short while ago I had a jewelry event in my home. I wanted to showcase my new work and get feedback. So I laid out all my latest jewelry pieces in an attractive display on my table where everything was easy to reach and pick up, and I invited a group of people to come over to try everything on. I served wine, cheese and crackers, olives and some other goodies. Five of the women that came actively tried on every piece of jewelry and had a blast. They were able to see what the pieces looked like on themselves and on others, without any pressure.

Designing

In the early 1990’s, I had a professor in a jewelry class. He wasn’t really a jeweler, he was a sculptor. I think he distracted us from his shortcomings in teaching technique by focusing on design. It’s interesting for me to note that because of his focus in this class, he imparted a bit of wisdom to me that goes beyond jewelry making and design.

Ideas

I don’t think about ideas too much… most of the time ideas come to me without me going to look for them. I may have to refine these ideas, but I don’t start out thinking… hmmm, I need to design something now, let me think up an idea. more
